Beginning right from the opening scene, I knew I had a winner with Gary Sinise’s “Of Mice and Men”. I read all the reviews previously which said that this was a great adaptation of the Steinbeck’s classic tale of the depression era – so I didn’t feel guilty about watching the movie before reading the book (ooops — was I supposed to admit that? :) Malkovich was over-acting a little, but clearly was a natural fit as the simple-minded Lenny, and Sinese is great as Lenny’s protector George. This movie was straight-up story telling – a refreshing change from too many over-the-top films. It represented all the complex aspects of the human condition beautifully — with many powerful and emotional scenes – including a conclusion that will both blow you away and cause you to calmly understand. I recommend this film highly!
