A story about a troubled kid growing up in England in the early 80’s and indoctrinated into a band of kids flirting and conflicting with the skinhead movement rebelling against poverty and perceived stupidity like the Faulklands war. I can’t claim to know if the movie was true to “being in England” in the 80’s, but it did a great job of taking me away to a different place for a few hours in a way that kept me very engaged, had a few real LOL moments, and it kept me wanting to know more about all of the characters.
Thomas Turgoose was excellent the 12 year old Shaun — who was both impressionable and independant. Shephen Graham was also a standout as the older/leader “Combo” with a friendly charisma — especially for a rough-and-tumble gang.
The filming, sets, costumes and direction were all excellent. I never had a moment when I wasn’t engaged, however, I feel the “descent in to Skinhead-dom” was a little contrived.
