A nuclear plant worker gets exposed and blamed by its corrupt management. Kicked out without pay, he steals plutonium to sell on the black market. Problem is, he picks a group of incompetent criminals to help him. In addition to having a relatively dramatic story, this movie delivers a surprising amound of laughs focused on the gaudy aspects of post Glasnost Russia and its crime scene.
A cast of unknowns do an unexpectedly good job of delivering laughs via sarcastic banter albeit mostly with really bad Russian-english accents. Most of what I saw deserves applause and a hope to see them in more movies!
This movie takes the classic american mafia theme a la goodfellas, adds some kitchy humor, touching drama, then sets it in Russia — nice. Great writing and directing and (according to reviewers in the know) an accurate (albeit a bit over the top) portrayal of Russia in the 90’s.
