Summary - Great 4.0

A quirky delight of a film that follows Benny and his care of his mentally ill sister Joon. Who is Joon’s perfect match? Well certainly the eccentric Sam. The movie cleverly intertwines the lives of Benny, Joon, their friends, and newfound acquaintances in to a witty tale that will surely entertain you and leaving you feeling good at the end.

Acting - Great 4.0

Mary Stuart Masterson (“Joon”) and Johnny Depp (“Sam”) must have had lots of fun with this film. It certainly seemed like they relished in their parts — which had the desired effect of being believable. Aidan Quinn (“Benny”) also makes an outstanding showing as the caring brother sometimes torn by events. Also liked Julianne Moore (“Ruthie”) who becomes the requisite love interest for Benny.

Film - Great 4.0

Even though the film seems to take on mental illness, I think it skirts around it more than anything. That said, it does make you think that we don’t give challenged folks enough of a chance to live a normal life on their own. Watching Joon and Sam hit it off was a joyous thing indeed, and it makes you think. All the story-lines have a happy ending — and rather than feel like it was too sappy, I actually enjoyed it a lot.
