While it does have its moments(dumb ones that is), Superman Returns remains to this day one of the most underrated comic book movies ever made.
While the film is looked at as a sequel, i look at it as a stand alone movie. It supposedly takes place 5 years after the events of Superman 2. The Man of Steel left when he heard fragments of his home planet of Krypton were found. He goes to find nothing but a graveyard. He comes back to find out Lois is engaged and has a child. He also finds out Lex Luthor is out of prison and has a plan to destroy the world. Great visuals, amazing action, and a solid story is what makes Superman Returns a must see movie for fans of the superhero genre.
Brandon Routh was actually good….impersonating Christopher Reeve that is. Kate Bosworth was just shallow and too bland as Lois Lane, not to mention she’s way too young for the part. The actor who steals the show is Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. I think that him and Sam Huntington’s Jimmy Olsen were the only characters they completely got 100% right.
The cinematography is breathtaking. The production value is very good. The action in this film is the best of all the films. However, the film does suffer from some silly dialogue.
The violence is turned up a bit since the first film. There’s no real sexual content, though.
The tag line for the original was ’’ You will believe a man can fly." This film makes you believe this flying man is nothing more than a simple man in his own modern world. It explores fictional characters as though they were ordinary people.
