Summary - Good 3.0

While the Peter Jackson adaptation of the legendary book trilogy “Lord of the Rings” has been called one of the greatest films of all time, this is an adaptation of the first two books in the series that has been either detested by fans or loved by them. However, it comes nowhere close to the greatness and pure epic-ness of the Jackson films. Personally, I’ve never read the trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien(I have, however, read The Hobbit), I simply look at these as movies. Surprisingly, I actually saw this version before the Jackson version.

This film is well made and greatly executed. The animation flat out kicks a**, its done with a style called roto-scoping(think Beowulf but with 2D). Director Ralph Bakshi has always been an expert of the craft and has been called a pioneer in adult animation.

Acting - Good 3.0

Voice acting is very strong, especially John Hurt as Aragorn.

Film - Great 4.0

Again, the animation is great. Some of the visuals look a little fake and too cheesey, especially the balrog and the orcs. The dialogue is strong, but there are moments where they go a little over the top. The score is very triumphant.

Edge - Risqué 2.4

The violence is truly brutal, and very realistic despite the animated layout.

Reality - Fantasy 5.0

Orcs, hobbits, and elves all roam in the beautiful world of Mr. Tolkien.
