This by far is my favorite black and white horror film. The Spiral Staircase is about a mute woman named Helen Capel. (Dorothy McGuire) There is a killer on the loose that kills people with disabilites such as Helen’s. If theres a killer stalking her, how does she call for help? What I love about this movie is the great quality and dialogue. Unlike most horror flick nowadays, the action doesn’t ake place until the end. This allows time for character development, so you can actually feel for the characters. The movie has a superbly strong ending, and yes, I will admit, I had a tear in my eye. Think that’s stupid? Why don’t you see the movie?!
Although Helen is unable to talk, her expressions on her face tell all. She was very strong throughout the movie, and it was enjoyable to watch her. Another character, Mrs. Warren, (Ethel Barrymore) plays her part very well. She had an outstanding performance that is quite unforgettable. Even every small part in the movie was played well.
The quality of the film felt great for an old movie. Regardless of the black and white, it felt like it could have been a new film. The way you feel for the characters was notable too, since movies can’t seem to do that anymore. The music was eerie, and I just love the sound of old movie music— it really helps the movie. The dialogue was a lot, but through it you were able to find out about Helen’s history and go in detail about every character.
This movie is very tame since it is quite old. Nothing in it is inappropriate.
The circumstance was not perfectly believeable, but that doesn’t take away form the film itself.
