2009 has been a horrible year for horror movies. We only got 1 really good one, and that was Drag me to Hell. Other than that, there’s nothing else I can think of. Oh wait… I just thought of one… Orphan. Orphan was hugley suprisingly a good film. After the trailer, I along with a lot of other people were wary that this would be just nother crapfest. We were wrong. Orphan follows a young girl named Esther, who is nice and sweet at first sight, but once you get to know her, she starts to become what she really is. An evil little girl who has the ability to kill. Wait. What’s that? Unlike The Good Son and The Bad Seed, this little girl actually KILLS someone? What’s that? MULTIPLE people? Hmmm… that’s a first. But that doesn’t excuse the story. But it doesn’t have to. Te story was very strong, and Isabelle Fuhrman’s performance is quite chilling.
Wow. The acting is so unexpectedly great. EVERYBODY in the film did a fantastic job in their role. Most noteably, Isabelle Fuhrman as Esther, who is now one of the best child actors I’ve seen. She really is great. The movie is worth seeing just for her.
The feel of the film is very eerie. The director did a great job, but screwed up a little bit with the twist ending. It was too unrealistic for my taste. The dialogue was very engaging and intriguing. All of the music was well done, and deserves some praise. The visuals were very good- the blood was realistic (yay) and the lighting looked fantastic.
There is a lot of violence, mainly towards children, which may be disturbing to some. There is quite a long sex scene, which is ended by little Esther coming in and watching. Esther stars out as very nice and sweet, but as the movie goes, she becomes quite evil.
All of the movie was somewhat realistic, but at the end, a fight scene ook place in freezing cold water. You would be dying of hypothermia in seconds.
