Coming in after the very well done ‘Grand Torino’ comes ‘Harry Brown’, a more dour version of the old vigilante theme from our friends across the pond. Confronting teenage gang violence in a British housing project, Michael Caine shows us that he’s got plenty of energy left in his acting career. Starting off with an excellent portrayal of lonely old-man life, HB misfires a bit in its transition to portraying Harry the vigilante, but there were some really memorable scenes that made the movie enjoyable overall.
Michael Caine did old and lonely in such a vivid and bleak manner I thought to myself ‘holy crap, how sad.’ The vigilante bit didn’t resonate so strongly with me, although I can’t imagine who would have pulled it off any better than he did – especially with what I’d consider a less than strong script.
Other than focusing on the Harry Brown character – and one amazingly well done scene where he goes gun shopping, the filming disappointed me a little. Not so much that I wouldn’t recommend seeing it, but not enough to live up to my expectations for a Michael Caine movie.
Regarding Wick’s Review
Although I wasn’t as hard as you on HB, I really liked your review – and thanks for posting that Wikchip — it indeed was the best part of the movie!
