Summary - OK 2.5

I saw another reviewer liken this movie to “Sienfeld with a dark side.” I think that captures Greenburg fairly well — or at least the beginning part of the movie. Things seem to devolve to a whirlwind of psychotic and nearly destructive behavior amidst the tongue-in-cheek tolerance of those around him. The humor in the movie wanes as the movie goes on, and instead of generating sarcastic chuckles, Greenberg relies on unexpected bouts of mean-ness and deeper drama to hold your attention. The end result is a mixed bag, but I still found it worth watching.

Acting - Good 3.0

Ben Stiller takes on a bit more serious of a role than in the past, and I think this brings out more of his talent. I think if he continues in that direction, he will do well. Greta Gerwig was not all that impressive, but fit in as the quirky love interest.

Film - OK 2.5

The movie starts out pleasantly entertaining, but finishes with too many inexplicable scenes – presumably justified because Greenburg is supposed to be recovering from a breakdown. However, I felt that this was lazy work, and especially felt the finish of the movie was weak.

Edge - Risqué 2.0

A few wacky sex scenes were actually the source of the movies biggest LOL moments.

Reality - Glib 2.0

  Tremendous review MJ! Tough, fair, and perceptive. Thus you’ve met the standard of the quality reviewer by being helpful to anyone thinking of whether or not to spend time watching this movie.

  FWIW, I sensed the movie was going to be roughly as you depicted it, then came across some professional reviews that praised it unduly. I still hung back, and now feel vindicated based on your trustworthy take.
