BrianSez's Review

Summary - OK 2.5

There has always been a fascination with movies that play upon religious mysticism. Some of the more famous ones like the Exorcist and the Omen are classics. Stigmata works this same angle, but was among the first to add in political conspiracy and mystery. Throw in a good measure of blood, pain, wild hallucinations, and possessions, and you’ve got a very entertaining mix – everything but the church’s kitchen sink. It isn’t quite as memorable as the aforementioned classics, not really because of its quality, but more because you get a “been there, done that” sort of feeling. Nevertheless, it is solid entertainment.

Acting - Good 3.0

Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne are two actors that I feel have never gotten their due recognition. They do a great job in this film, have solid chemistry together, but unfortunately come across as a weaker presence in the wake of all the religious-horror-mystery happenings around them.

Film - OK 2.5

Pretty much on-par with the other movies of this genre, but the symbolism is a bit overdone. Too many clichés thrown in for good measure. If they had just stuck with the Stigmata part, without also throwing in evil possessions and gratuitous violence, it might have been more believable, and therefore a bit scarier.
