Rome, in all its glory, is captured in this exceptional film about a general who is betrayed, forced into slavery, and ultimately into a gladiator. Russell Crowe gives a commanding performance in the lead role, and is matched perfectly by Joaquin Phoenix as the sniveling Commodus, who personifies political corruption and greed.
Ridley Scott’s exceptional blend of special effects with a strong storyline and memorable scenes created a must-see guy film. The danger and toils of battle are vivid, as are the unforgettable scenes in the arena, where Maximus must fight every form of beast and warrior to please the roman citizens.
Watched on DVD.
Crowe gives one of his best performances I’ve seen, and Phoenix comes through strong as the leader you love to hate.
Excellent visual effects through out, combined with a topnotch musical score that really helps set the mood and heighten the emotions.
Brutal combat, violence, nastiness…..it’s a film about gladiators. Would you expect anything less?
