BrianSez's Review

Summary - OK 2.5

Supernatural thriller set during time of bubonic plague about a monk Osmud and Ulrich, a bishop’s envoy who tries to figure out what is keeping a village alive when all others around are dying. Although the story itself is fantasy, with a lot of surreal elements, the film does a good job of embedding you in a medieval world where violence and superstition was all around. Plenty of sword slashing action and good old medieval torture devices for you as well. Surprisingly, the movie has moral lessons in it which are poignant. Even though the movie isn’t top tier, it is enjoyable and even engrossing at times.

Acting - OK 2.5

Sean Bean played the strong, stoic and man of few words Ulrich, and Eddie Redmayne did pretty good as the inquisitive and daring monk Osmud. Much of the rest was fairly unremarkable.
