Better than expected romance and typically painful Adam Sandler comedy make Just Go With It less awful than Sandler’s usual. The former comes from RomCom pro Jennifer Aniston, who creates some palpable chemistry with Sandler; The latter from Sandler’s recent shtick of caricaturing Hollywood archetypes for lifestyle comedy.
This time he’s a Hollywood plastic surgeon who acts like a jerk but has a heart of gold. He was a similarly drawn Hollywood agent in Grown Ups, his previous outing. What’s next? A sitcom star who cavorts with porn stars, but really loves his kids? Or perhaps a director who date-rapes a teenager, but is really a lovably misunderstood artist?
Let’s hear it for the ladies. Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman class up the joint, while swimsuit model Brooklyn Decker doesn’t embarrass herself.
The guys, not so much. Second banana Nick Swardson wasn’t remotely funny, a big problem for the wingman in a comedy. Nor was an unrecognizable Kevin Nealon funny.
Dennis Dugan adds to his Sandler oeuvre, which also includes directing Grown Ups, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Big Daddy and others. Hey, it’s a living, a big living.
Regarding Wick’s Review
Yeah, if Sandler made me laugh, I’d be forgiving too.
Regarding Wick’s Review
Ouch! I was much more forgiving… must be my Sandler soft-spot
