This brilliant animated French movie shows the life of a struggling illusionist, and a girl who believes the man is truly magic. They way the film uses hand drawn animation, along with minimal dialogue really does make it magical. The true depth within these two characters is amazing, and the fact that they never really speak makes it more challenging for the director to get his point across. Let me tell you, he (or she?) did a fine job doing this. The characters they meet along the way are lovable, although we never get to see much of them.
Don’t let the PG rating fool you. This movie is shockingly depressing, and NOT a feel-good movie. The ending is incredibly depressing, and I felt….. devastated. AMAZING movie.
Although there wasn’t much dialogue, the voices were very nice to listen to and were perfect for their characters.
Again, there isn’t much dialogue, but when there is, there are no subtitles. I, fortunately, am almost fluent in french, so I understood what they were saying. You don’t have to know french to enjoy this movie, though. The music is brilliant. Also, the animation is gorgeous, and is really amazing to look at. The level of detail is shocking- I can’t imagine having to draw all of the background movements over and over.
Safe for kids, though very depressing.
Very realistic.
