Really, really good movie. I started watching because of the cast (holy powerhouse lineup, batman!) but got sucked in because of the story and the less well-known actors. This is definitely not an uplifting movie, but it’s a GREAT story and well worth watching. I was especially happy to watch a movie from the days when taking revenge on people didn’t necessarily mean torturing or even killing them — it was more about settling the score emotionally and mentally. Goooooooooooooo 90s!
Kevin Bacon, Billy Crudup, Robert De Niro, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman, Brad Pitt, Jeffrey Donovan … and yet, the best actors in the movie are the 4 boys who play the young versions of the main characters.
Not a movie for the kiddies. Abuses and violence of all kinds are alluded to and shown in varying degrees, and there’s a lot of swearing.
According to the author of the book upon which this movie is based, the events depicted are all true. He should know — he’s one of the main characters in the story. The State of New York, however, says that none of this, not even the court case, ever took place in Manhattan.
And so the mystery lives on.
