It is refreshing to see a movie about drama that most of us can identify with – the genuine ups and downs of life and love. Well, it’s at least an acknowledgement that nobody’s life is ever truly “normal.†In fact, the emotion around a failing relationship is so real, that the movie is sometimes hard to watch. And sad, especially when Clanfrance chooses to contrast later-in-life pain with earlier-in-life lovestruck optimism.
Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are great in this movie. Completely believable as a a woman being brought in to a tough situation via poor choices, and he as a genuine guy with flaws trying to make things happen. These two didn’t need natural chemistry – pure acting talent made both the falling love and falling apart seem dead on.
Clanfrance’s filming style works well. As you are confronted with the pain of the relationship, you are reminded of its romantic start. Although the story may not wow anybody, the acting and the presentation will impress.
