izzio's Review

Summary - Perfect 5.0

Stunning. Beautiful. Deep. Visual. Depressing. These are all words that rightly describe the experience titled Melancholia. Melancholia is split into two parts that contrast, yet compliment each other so well. The entire movie basically consists of a woman name Justine and her sister Claire. Justine is a melancholiac, (that’s a real thing, I swear) which is someone who is so depressed, they can’t find the good in anything. Part one shows Justine’s marriage, and how she completely ruins it. Part two goes on to show her severe depression, and how she can’t even do daily things like taking a bath. She is now living in an enormous house- country club thing with her sister, Claire. Claire is stressed and frightened about a planet called Melancholia, which is headed to destroy Earth. It’s extremely hard to describe this plot without giving anything away (though, there isn’t much) or going too much into detail. That’s why my little synopsis sounds like a second grader’s book report.
The pace of the movie is extremely slow, clocking in at about two and a half hours. Usually I would hate this, but this movie really captivated me. Everything from the scenery to the engaging dialogue was just amazing. A truly remarkable movie.
