Summary - Barely OK 2.0

Skip this movie, unless you’re really bored. It’s not TERRIBLE… but it’s also not great. This movie had the potential to be funny, but instead, left me wanting more.

This self-proclaimed (and perhaps falsely-advertised) comedy stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as “Rick” and “Fred”, two middle-aged married gentlemen who happen to be best friends. When they begin to have problems within their respective marriages, they are given a “Hall Pass” by their wives, which grants them each a week off from marriage, and allows them the opportunity to do whatever they want during their week, as if they weren’t married. The bulk of the movie is spent following Rick and Fred, and seeing how they choose to spend their week off.

While there are some humorous parts, the movie isn’t all that funny. While entertaining at times, the movie as a whole was disappointing. If there’s nothing else on TV, then go for it. You might get a few laughs. However, don’t go out of your way to Redbox this one.

Acting - OK 2.5

Being a long-time fan of Saturday Night Live, I like Jason Sudeikis (Fred), However, he was just okay in this movie.

In my opinion, Owen Wilson (Rick) kinda sucked in this movie, compared to some of his other roles in the “Meet the Parents” trilogy, “You, Me, and Dupree,” and “Wedding Crashers.” He seemed very old and displaced in this film, and even awkward at times. I was not a fan of his performance in this movie.

I don't know how many wives would actually allow their husbands a whole week off from marriage, with no restrictions on what they are allowed to do with that time. The movie suggests that with the granting of "hall pass" from a spouse, it is understood that the husband can go as far as sleeping with another woman without it being considered cheating and without any repercussions. To me, the concept of a "hall pass" while entertaining, is a bit far-fetched.

This was pretty accurate, if I do say so. Both Rick and Fred try to pick up women at various bars and nightclubs throughout the movie during their week off, but fail miserably and fall on their faces due to their old age and long period of time "off-the-market."
