The police and a bunch of bad guys are after Elise’s (Angelina Jolie) lover. She randomly chooses Frank (Johnny Depp) as a decoy while on a train to Venice so she can secretly meet up with her elusive mystery man. What happens afterwards is a mostly uninspiring series of formulaic encounters and action scenes of the hunt-chase-getaway variety. There is an interesting twist at the end, but I can’t help but feeling that this film was a large waste of big-screen acting talent. I’d say skip it unless you are trapped on a long flight or are a devoted Depp or Jolie fan-boy/girl.
It was unusual to see Johnny Depp in such a submissive role with anti-climactic action. And the pairing with the much stronger character played by Angelina Jolie seemed off. Never mind the lack of chemistry between them. However, I did like Paul Bettany as the police inspector and Steven Berkoff always plays the bad guy really well.
It was just poorly written. Not much more to say about it. From the non-believable characters, comical over-use of police and bad guy track-and-chase sequences, and mis-use of big screen talent, the tourist was an unimpressive production.
