Mark Wahlberg is a good guy who needs to return to his bad old days of running contraband in order to bail out a brother in law and keep his family safe. Contraband isn’t a groundbreaking movie, but it meets expectations with kick-ass acting, a unique story, and consistently great acting that will provide you action/drama lovers a good time.
The acting is what you should see this movie for: Wahlberg is predictable, but he fits the role so well – it is just pure enjoyment. Ben Foster was impressive as the ex partner who can’t quite do the right thing. The MVA (most valuable actor) goes to Giovanni Ribisi for his ulta bad dude routine, and Kate Beckinsale is only Ok as Wahlberg’s rough-edged wife. Finally, I enjoyed seeing JK Simmons as the that wink-wink, easily bought ‘Narleans captain.
Regarding BrianSez’s Review
Love the MVA award. Absolutely agree.
We ended up teeter-tootering around the same scores. I went A3.5 & F4.0 ≈ S4.0. You went A4.0 & F3.5 ≈ S3.5.
Regarding Wick’s Review
Great review! I haven’t sorted everything out with mine yet, but I’m likely to come just a little under Great. It was loads of fun – Wahlberg is such a natural fit for this type of thing.
