Rating TTS was tough, mostly because I was never a huge Stooges fan. I think that if I were, the rating would be a ‘Really Great’ – because I totally recognize the raw talent that had to go in to duplicating the masters. And duplicate they did. Nearly perfectly. So, for all you Nyuk, Nyuk fans out there – you will come away very pleased. Trust me.
Seriously, these guys had Larry, Mo, and Curly down to a T. No, not every acting job was perfect, but I was in awe of how well the three did the shtick. Sean Hayes of Will and Grace fame (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly), and Chris Diamantopoulos (Moe) were a hoot! If I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be Chris – who just like in the originals led the pack and showed the most range. I understand that it took several weeks of training to get this type of slapstick down pat.
Not perfect, but good: Jane Lynch (Glee) was a great pick for mother superior, but Larry David had me in stitches as Sister Mary-Mengele (“What is this, a musical?”). Jennifer Hudson might have well been invisible, and SofÃa Vergara is way funnier in Modern Family, and just an ’eh job from Stephen Collins.
Same applies to this rating as my summary. I think a true stooges fan would put this in the really great range, because it was an absolute homage and tribute to the original. I ding it a little because there was nothing added that made it special enough to carry the brand forward,
Lots of knocking, hitting, falling, etc. – but tame nonetheless
