David and Amy return to her hometown in Mississippi. A recipe for disaster taking a west coast Yankee and intellectual writer no less to confront the rough rednecks who have a historical and current liking to Amy. Dirty tricks, lots of tension and drama ensues, with a thrilling violence-filled ending that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but who cares. I never saw the original, but I’m told it far surpasses this sloppy re-make. Entertaining, but not great.
James Marsden and Kate Bosworth never really seem to click – an unnatural pairing. Maybe that was on purpose. Nevertheless they work individually. James’ character doesn’t really kick in until the end, and Kate is little more than eye candy with a fabricated southern edge. My favorite picks are James Woods as the alcoholic crazed coach, and Alexander Skarsgard as the ex boyfriend with something to prove.
In this re-make, the acting and action make things seems nonsensical and gratuitous. I really want to see the original now, whom reviewers all seem to think did a much better job at conveying the story.
