Margot at the Wedding was a serious indulgence in dysfunctional character study, focusing more or less on two estranged sisters played by Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Can you say issues? Throw in a complex husband to be Jack Black and a milk-toast John Turturro, and we’ve got many of the major ones covered: narcissism, low self esteem, various neurosis, mild pedophilia, and self identity confusion. This isn’t as bad as some of the indie movies I have seen, but if you are into more straightforward drama, without complexities, this may be a heavy watch for you. Whether or not you can appreciate the subject matter, you should come away with a great appreciation for some seriously good acting.
Nicole Kidman commands nearly every screen she is on, and Margot is no exception.
Jennifer Jason Leigh also shows her tremendous acting chops, and I dare say just about matched Nicole’s presence.
Jack Black comes across a bit icky for my tastes, I really think he should stick to funny roles.
John Turturro doesn’t have a large role, but he is predictably very good.
Zane Paris is very good as a very effeminate seeming boy. Was that on purpose? Hard to tell.
