BrianSez's Review

Summary - Very Good 3.5

Why didn’t they think of this before? Instead of just outsmarting and escaping witches, why not chew them up with machine guns, arrows, and samurai-style punches? Well gratuitous action fans, your movie has arrived. Watching the pair of Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton kick some witch-ass was lots of fun. Highly stylized action and nastily-great witches with nods to the old fairy-tale made for a bunch of fun. As long as you don’t go in to this with Oscar expectations, you will have a smile on your face. Especially if you see this in 3D.

Acting - OK 2.5

Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton do indeed make a great ass-kicking brother and sister. And great chemistry. You almost wished they weren’t siblings. But not to fear, the appearance of the gorgeous Pihla Viitala kept Jeremy busy with more than just witches. Derek Mears in troll-like form gets Gemma’s motherly attentions as well.

Now lets talk about the bevy of beautiful women made to look, well, not so beautiful. In fact, horrid. Its just amazing to see what they all look like in real-life – certainly a challenge for makeup. Too many to mention, I’ll at least give the biggest kudos to Famke Janssen as the grand evil bitch witch. Nice job.
