Cockney-accented bad guys basking in the Sun of Spain, drinking, blundering about, and finally happy are then interrupted from their retirement from crime by none other than one badass Ben Kingsley. Just the guy to intimidate and make them shake in their boots. And make no mistake, this first part of this movie is all about Ben. A raunchy, crude, rambling, and poetically brutal Ben. The second half? It’s all about the return to what paid for that fancy Spanish villa – the heist. Well sort of – its really about the re-emergence of a gang who pull off both an escape from Ben and getting away with unbelievable sh*t. Bottom line? This movie is actually quite refreshingly original and entertaining – nice job.
Ben Kingsley is the bomb – seriously. His lines are a bit silly at times, but he pulls it off in a fascinating way.
Ray Winstone is no slouch either – pulling the story along when Ben isn’t there to steal the show.
Compadres Ian McShane, Amanda redman, James Fox, and Juliane White are all really solid performers. As a team, it was great to see.
John Glazier goes big with the characters for effect. A little over the top at times, but when I look back at it – it worked really well. Oh, and centering the film at the coast of Spain? Let’s just say it’s on my bucket list now.
