Summary - Very Good 3.5

Robert Duvall takes bible-thumping to a new level as he adeptly leads us through the ups and downs of a preacher whose life threatens to spin out of control. Cheated on and ousted from his church, the Apostle’s journey takes us through rural Louisiana and a world of righteousness, passionate devotion, and just a little bit of crazy. Enjoy this movie for Duvall’s acting prowess, immersion into southern baptist culture, and a great story about redemption and acceptance.

Acting - Great 4.0

Robert Duvall is predictably remarkable in his role as the bible-belt preacher. Full on southern-style preaching might have been a bit over-acted, but it was fun to watch. He even perfected the borderline-psychotic obsession that accompanied the craft.

Although she was as versatile as ever, Farah Fawcett was a weak fit as Duval’s cheating wife.

Interesting to see June Carter Cash minor role as the Apostle’s bible toting and singing mom.

Miranda Richardson was pleasant as Duval’s newfound love interest

Billy Bob Thornton – not much of a role – but you can see how we was making a name for himself even then.

Other notables: Rick Dial as the genial radio station owner; John Beasley as the “nice guy” co preacher friend

Film - Very Good 3.5
