Summary - Very Good 3.5
A characteristically strong female vibe emotes from Enough Said, writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s latest. Her romcom is not all feminine however. Some men are required. Good thing they got a real one.
James Gandolfini – in his final role – charms as a divorced Dad who likes to be comfortable. He develops considerable chemistry and several laughs with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Of course, we expect nothing less from her, a Comedy Queen who has developed sexy-funny chemistry with so many actors going back at least as far as Seinfeld. She’s notably great here as a massage therapist Mom looking for love.
This au courant movie touches chords from middle-age dating to parenting teen girls to living in a service economy to never being far from our iPhones. It delivers more than a few laughs along the way, which – as many women have come to realize – is damn near a guarantee of a very good date, or mate. Enough said.
Acting - Great 4.0
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini are delightfully mismatched.
Like her Seinfeld character, Louis-Dreyfus plays a superficially attractive reprobate, here spying on both her lover and his ex. Nasty bit of business, that. TV’s Comedy Queen should do more movies, lots more.
Gandolfini proves himself an actor first and a large Italian Jersey guy second by not reminding anyone of Tony Soprano. Big Jim, we badly miss you already.
Toni Collette & Ben Falcone are very good as “the best friend couple.”
Catherine Keener – charter member of the Holofcener Stock Co. – ably anchors a key part of the story.

Enough said is an apt title for what happens when the sexes come together on female territory in writer-director Nicole Holofcener’s latest romcom. Indeed when you focus on a bunch of mostly non-Latina Angelinas, extremely empowered estrogen emotionalism envelopes the entire enterprise in exceptional expressions of expectation. Guys can only hope to hang on for the ride, ex post facto.
Being a guy, I’m happy to enjoy Holofcener’s films, Enough Said now joining 2010’s Please Give in her very satisfactory oeuvre.
