Summary - Perfect 5.0

“13 Assassins” was, I believe, the first true samurai movie I’ve ever watched, but it certainly won’t be my last. That being said, though, I just hope others can live up to it. The first scene landed my jaw on the floor, and I struggled to keep from drooling through the rest of the movie because I just couldn’t close my mouth all the way. Outstanding acting, beautiful filmography, and a compelling story blended to create a true cinematic masterpiece.

“13 Assasins” could easily have been titled “The Last Samurai” (and deserves the title much more than the Tom Cruise movie by that same title).

Acting - Perfect 5.0

My favorite acting in the entire movie is in the first scene (a solo spot), but the rest of the movie maintains an incredibly high level of skill.

Male Stars - Perfect 5.0

Female Stars - Perfect 5.0

Female Costars - Perfect 5.0

Male Costars - Perfect 5.0

Film - Really Great 4.5

The story was somewhat hard to follow, not, I think, because of the story itself but because the names (being foreign for me) were hard to keep track of. I found this to be a plus, though, because it forced me to put down my iPhone, close my laptop, and actually concentrate on the movie (what a change of pace)!

Also, can we talk about the sets for this movie? Wait, did I say sets? I meant, can we please talk about the actual settings that this movie was filmed in? I mean, just outstanding.

Direction - Perfect 5.0

Dialogue - Really Great 4.5

Music - Really Great 4.5

There’s a lot of blood and graphic sword-fight violence as well as one scene that will leave you with a horrific mental image for a long time after viewing. You’ve been warned.

Violence Monstrous 5.0

Rudeness Salty 1.8

Reality - Glib 2.0

Circumstantial - Glib 2.0

Biological - Natural 1.0

Physical - Surreal 3.0
