In Hollywood’s wild, wild west – the Sherrif was often a judge, jury, and executioner all rolled in to one. In Hollywood’s wild, wild Dredd, the “Judges” play the same role. This futuristic tale of crime and punishment appeals to our inner sensibilities of “just blow them away, you know they are guilty”. Of course, it can’t be 100% subjective, there’s got to be a strong dose of psychic abilities and crime locating technologies — just to make it cooler and help us feel better about the premise. And then when guilt is determined? Fire-power awesomeness.
Karl Urban’s Judge Dredd suffers from being hidden behind his mask and need to be the ‘strong silent type’. Too bad, I’ve seen him in other work (like the TV series ‘Almost Human’), and he can do much better.
Olivia Thirlby is forgettable as the psychic rookie sidekick
Lena Hedley gets my acting kudos for her gritty crime boss character Ma Ma
Nice use of effects, background sets, and firepower.
Regarding modern marvel’s Review
“Oh, and did i mention that you’ll watch this all with a big ol’ grin on your face?” Great review Marvel. Having never been a Dredd fan, I wanna watch it now for the grin and the Mega City I production design.
