Son of God had the potential to be an Easter season blockbuster, but instead – it mostly fell flat. Instead of big-screen immersion, you get a made-for-TV feel. Instead of Jesus as a dynamic, powerful presence – you get a wimpy, almost icky man. Instead of a sense of good and evil, you get this sort of mushy non-committal middle ground. What’s worse, is that I read that film often got quotes wrong, and spends more time mis-charecterizing Jewish elders than it does on Roman brutality. And finally, because the execution was so flat, the movie was way to looooooonnnnnnnng…. and viewer stamina runs out well before any chance at impressing anyone. I’m not a bible scholar by any means, but my impression is that if you are, you will be sorely disappointed.
Some of the bright spots were Sebastian Kapp as John, Joe Wredden as Judas, and Greg Hicks as Pilate. Diogo Morgado as Jesus was pretty, but not impressive.
There was some impressive Moroccan scenery, but it mostly could have been filmed anywhere – like Nevada for example.
Ummm…. I think I’ll stay away from this setting.
