Bruce Dern caps a great career as a quietly cantankerous old man in search of a million. And so begins a journey through the gritty and cold Nebraska – among old Midwest men who equally don’t talk much. Well, some of them do – and those are the ones who are after his potential money. The black & white coloring adds to the dreariness and highlights the old-school – where lol moments come unexpectedly – primarily from out of left field commentary from old friends and family. Following the film can be difficult at times, but the character studies are worth it.
Besides our man Bruce, a solid cast of supporting actors make it a joy to watch: Will Kirk and Bob Odenkirk as the mostly tolerant sons; June Squibb is a hoot as the wife/mom. Stacy Keach makes an energetic appearance as well.
