Some are calling this a sci-fi Groundhog Day, but of course Edge of Tomorrow is not a comedy and is much more sophisticated. The two things it does have in common are the facts that it is (a) a really great movie, and (b) involves the use of repeating time over and over again. I learned that one does not get sick of seeing Tom and Emily Blunt over and over again…. Ok, mostly because of Emily – but the sci-fi twisty story does a really great job of keeping you roped in to see just how things will work out. And on the blockbuster front – you can’t go wrong with bad-ass soldiers battling bad-ass aliens for the survival of earth. That’s one formula that will consistently work. The bottom line is that Edge was ‘Cool’ – plain and simple. The action was great, but the story and aliens were way ‘Cool’, and it was a really great way to spend a few hours this summer.
A cool movie needs a cool cast. Tom and Emily were cool enough, but it was also cool to see Brendan Gleeson and Bill Paxton in supporting roles.
