Like ‘Roots’ back in 1977, 12 Years will surely become an iconic telling of the U.S.‘s infamous past with slavery. The stories about Kunta Kinte and Solomon Northup are different twists on the same horrible tale. Kunta being ripped away from life in Africa, while Solomon is tricked away from his Yankee protections. As far as production quality, Steve McQueen’s telling of our slavery story packed more of a punch than Roots – helped by a fantastically dramatic script and screenplay – and the far more polished feel of a 2013 movie over a 1977 miniseries. The bottom line is that the story is what makes 12 Years so impactful. Like all tragic tales in human history, the tale of slavery is one that should be re-told every so often – lest we forget. Story aside, how about the entertainment factor? You won’t be dissappointed. Non-stop action and drama will leave you impressed – slavery story or not.
