A very good story about WW II pilot volunteers to fight in Israel’s ‘Machal’ in its war for independence. This is as much a story about the history of the state of Israel as it is the Israeli air-force and the foreign volunteers that made it happen. Very interesting, including the creative and clandestine purchase of war surplus planes and the scouring of US war records for pilots that had Jewish sounding last names to recruit. Then there was buying ‘Messer-shits’ from Czechoslovakia (see the movie to figure that one out!) No small commitment: they risked losing their native citizenship and going to jail for the cause. I leaned a lot; Time well spent!
