When I rate this movie, I come to it as someone who has seen the entire 51 episode FullMetal Alchemist anime series. This is sort of a ‘finisher’ to the series and I recommend you don’t watch it until you’ve seen all of the anime!!!!!!! That being said. From a series steeped in religion, politics, military affairs, and the grey between what is right and wrong, the movie carries the themes beautifully. This movie is the perfect ending to the series (POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD.) and ties everything up neatly. Set in early Germany just before the rise of Hitler, it uses this setting to draw some striking parallels between the trials faced in their world, and ours.
The voice acting is superb. I’d go so far as to say even better than the Japanese track and THAT, fans of anime will know, is a rarity almost never seen. All your favourites reprise their roles, Vic Mignogna, Travis Willingham, etc. and do a fantastic job. Few ensembles can convey the emotion this cast can.
Beautiful, clean, animation with very little (if any) noticable colour bleeding. The army of armoured soldiers are done CG and don’t quite seem to fit in with their 2-d surroundings.
Set in Germany just behind of the rise of Hitler. Nazi symbols and brief white-supremicist talk. Hitler himself is show giving a speech and firing a gun.
A character is transformed into a monster and kills another character by way of crushing them to death.
A lot of blood is shown throughout.
