BrianSez's Review

Summary - Very Good 3.5

The story of Newton Knight and his rebelliousness against the Confederates is legendary. The fact that he lived, played a prominent role during the reconstitution, grew old and died of natural causes. The biggest thing he became known for, a band of deserters and runaway slaves in Jones County Mississippi, came to fruition because of poor conditions in the army and mistreatment of the women, children, and property back home. The nail in the coffin was the 20 slave rule that exempted the rich who owned enough slaves that they could get out of fighting. McConaughey and cast do a great job. The story is of great interest and the action intense. I wonder why it didn’t do better in the box office (only made 20M against a 50M budget).
