So this is what the kerfuffle is about, a comic-book superhero whose main superpower is to create cartoons that save the day. Basically, it’s sixth-grade superhero shit, but does make for a sporadically good movie. Mostly that’s because of leading-man Ryan Reynolds, who plays it all for fun, as has become his wont.
Backed up by an overqualified cast, Reynolds makes Green Lantern a largely enjoyable lark, at least for those of us still in touch with our inner sixth-grader. Paired with now-wife Blake Lively, he shines brightly.
Ryan Reynolds plays self-deprecating better than most leading-men, making him ideal to play Hal Jordan / Green Lantern. Reynolds would go on to perfect the act as Deadpool. Further, he has real chemistry with Blake Lively, who have since married and had children. To state the obvious, Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively are a great looking couple. She is a treat in the right role, for instance, as she was in The Town.
Their overqualified supporting cast includes Peter Sarsgaard, the great Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Jay O. Sanders and Angela Bassett.
Green Lantern is lots of fun. Clearly, it’s intended to be fun, in part because it’s full of self-deprecation.
Regarding BrianSez’s Review
Bummer, Bri. Perhaps you meant to walk into Super-8 and mistakenly wandered into Green Lantern instead. ;-)
