RPO is a great story done up in a very good film. These days, it is not as futuristic as it was in 2011 when the book was published, in fact, the whole premise of a virtual reality driven populace seems downright predictable for those of us with an eye on technology futures. Nevertheless, the story is quite engaging; mixing in plenty of action, adventure, young-love and the continual thread of sci-fi. Great fun!
By the way, many Rush fans like me were disappointed that Ernest Cline’s homage to the great band wasn’t upheld in the movie. There were a few Rush references (a t-shirt and a poster), but no soundtrack (what!?!?), and nowhere near the original novel’s use of parallels with Rush’s great masterpiece 2112.
