A highly controversial, but beautiful film that challenges the viewer to think about the nature of God and humanity.
Willam Dafoe and Harvey Keitel give tow of the best performances of their careers as Jesus and Judas respectively.
Beautifully shot on location in Moracco. With Scorsese behind the camera, there is a lot of amazing cinematography to behold. Even 20 years after being made, the film does not look dated.
The film’s controversy comes from it’s portrayal of Jesus having sex with Mary Magdalene, though not explicit, there is still a moderate amount of nudity at various points. Crucifiction and torture is shown at several points in fairly graphic details. Nothing as graphic as “The Passion of the Christ” but comparable.
