Wick's Review
Summary -
Good
3.0
The stars are the thing in Hobbs & Shaw, an amiably over-the-top ultra-action comedy that’s more charismatic than funny. The Rock, Jason Statham, Idris Elba and Dame Helen Mirren don’t come cheap. Good thing they’re worthy of the millions they received, since the script is third rate at best.
Charisma allowed this Fast & Furious spinoff to get made. Now, how about a sequel to this spinoff?

Leading Stars
- Dwayne Johnson loves playing characters like Luke Hobbs, a super agent with a precocious daughter and an unlimited FX budget. Even better, we love seeing him as characters like Hobbs.
- Jason Statham isn’t my cup of tea, but is well cast as Deckard Shaw, a British mercenary and Hobbs’ reluctant buddy in Hollywood’s one millionth buddy movie.
Supporting Stars
- Idris Elba can’t rise above his ridiculous role, a “cyber-genetically enhanced” terrorist.
- Vanessa Kirby disappoints..
- Eiza González sizzles per usual but otherwise disappoints. Blame the script..
- Helen Mirren chews scenery as a criminal matriarch, a la Animal Kingdom.
- Eddie Marsan is the character actor of the moment.
- Eliana Su’a is cute and winning as the Rock’s teen daughter.
- Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart are a hoot in a cameo.

Nice touch to include a Samoan interlude to the script. Ridiculous yes, but entirely apropos given Dwayne Johnson’s Samoan heritage.
