A film directed, written, and starred in by Tom Hanks can’t be bad right? This feel good film with a catchy sound track from 1996 starred Hanks with little known actors Liv Tyler, Ethan Embry, Tom Everett Scott, Giovanni Ribisi and Charlize Theron as a bunch of small town kids in the 60’s. Following the quick rise and fall of a one hit wonder band, Hanks manages to not only capture the excitement of the 60’s music scene, but make you care about the characters in the process.
The acting by some soon-to-be A-list actors is great in this film. If you are a movie buff, you can also trace most of Hanks acting career by the cameos of great character actors seen in other Hanks movies including a short scene with Bosom Buddies co-star Peter Scolari and Hanks wife Rita Wilson.
Hanks obviously coaches the actors with the experience he has after 2 oscars with great performance direction. The music is some of the best original soundtrack music that has ever been created with authentic feeling 60’s pop tunes.
Not a lot of edge here (or needed) to this feel good romp.
The realism of this film has been felt by hundreds of 1 hit wonder bands.
