Machinist Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) hasn’t slept in a year and is as skinny as Mary-Kate Olsen on a good day. He also lives his life in a robotic manner, doing the same thing each day. However, that changes when Trevor’s world starts coming down on him. Apparently, Trevor is becoming more paranoid by the day, seeing things and people no one else sees. Is someone targeting him? Or has the lack of sleep affected Trevor’s brain?
Christian Bale is absolutely FANTASTIC as Trevor. He’s one of those actors who actually becomes the character he protrays, making him a legend in the making. I mean losing 60 pounds for a role and then gaining 100 back to play Batman either makes him really committed to his craft or should get him committed to a psych ward. He’s never done a bad film and this one is no exception. Why Oscar has missed the boat on this guy is beyond me. Jennifer Jason Leigh is also great as Trevor’s favorite call girl, Stevie. She’s does this role before in other films and is always effective in doing them. Aitana Sanchez-Gijon is mesmerizing as Trevor’s favorite waitress, Marie. She has this aura of purity and “goodness” about her that’s very appealing. And Michael Ironside and John Sharian are both good as Miller and Ivan respectively. Especially Sharian, who brings a threatening role to Trevor’s life. Great acting all around.
Jennifer Jason Leigh shows her breasts. Bale is shirtless, showing off his bones [if you’re into that sort of thing]. Some sex scenes but nothing revealing. We also get cut off fingers, a slit throat, some blood, and something that decays. Plus there is some foul language in the film.
