For me, the next best thing to a war movie, is a movie about astronauts, and “The Right Stuff” did not dissappoint. A 4 hour movie might seem daunting, but it goes by quickly because of the intriguing story, great actors, and constant action and drama — not to mention plentiful humor. This movie goes through the different phases of America’s space program. From the early days of testosterone-filled fly-boys doing whatever it takes to break speed records, to not-much-more-than monkeys getting thrown around in simulators and g-force generators, to the scared men watching trials of rockets go up in fireballs and finally taking the ride of their lives… This movie was a real blast to watch, I highly recommend it.
I couldn’t think of a better cast for this film than Sam Shepard as Chuck Yaeger, Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as Gordon Cooper, and Fred Ward as Gus Grissom — and last but not least — Barbara Hershey is hot as Glenn’s wife Glennis. They all naturally fit the parts — seemingly without trying.
