Sacha Baron Cohen is at it again, offending literally everybody imaginable in merciless ways. In 2006, Cohen released one of the funniest cult classics of all time- Borat. While Bruno doesn’t really compare to Borat, it’s still a gut-busting fun time. See, I watched this movie while I was in a somewhat dark mood, and it really brought up my spirits.
The glory of Borat comes from the unknowingness of the individuals Cohen brings to the camera. But is Bruno able to do that? Well, sorta. Some scenes felt very heavily staged, since they weren’t a bit natural, but other scenes actually did feel quite real. Scenes include the “Mexican Chair People”, interviewing a terrorist, having a black baby (though that wasn’t just one scene), being locked up in some sort of sexual contraption, a wrestling match, showing a video of ahem “dancing”, and best of all- the swinger’s party. So there you go, a nice long list of extremely memorable scenes, that lead up to one of the funniest grand finales of all time.
So why did poor little Bruno get such a bad rap? Well, I’d have to say either because it pissed of homophobes, or it pissed of gay people themselves. I could really see Cohen not intentionally ridiculing the gays, but rather just having a good time showing off his talent. So see it? Yes, but Bruno isn’t for the easlity offended or for the easily sickened.
Sacha Baron Cohen as Bruno was just perfect. His facial expressions, and his “innocence” really made Bruno such a great character.
Because some of the scenes were posing as “real”, but they were simply staged, I’m going to lower the rating a bit. The dialogue was amaing in the sense that he tried to piss people off no matter what.
Ok, let’s just be honest here, this is one of the most sexually explicit movies ever made. Male genitalia is shown in an extreme close-up, a swinger’s party with a lot of sex is shown, and some implications of sexual acts are made.
Because it claims to be real, yes, it’s realistic.
It turns out the damn umlaut in the title made it hard to find.
