Promising concept, great star, disappointing execution: My Super Ex-Girlfriend is one of those movies where the trailer captures all the worthwhile moments. Pity, since Uma Thurman is incandescent as ever and the trailer was freshly funny when it first appeared.
Uma Thurman is Amazonian in non-supernatural roles, so she’s ideal as G-Girl – neurotically needy super-hero. Too bad for her – and us – the script was far from super.
Luke Wilson – a natural sad-sack – fits as the guy who has trouble standing up to girlfriends and buddies alike.
Also strong are Anna Faris and Rainn Wilson as the sweet normal girl and the low-down buddy respectively.
Eddie Izzard disappoints as the Evil Genius. A lackluster villain is kryptonite to a super-hero movie.
Ivan Reitman made a career directing high production value comedies based on pop culture references. It worked spectacularly well once, with Ghostbusters. Here it doesn’t, even given the endless possibilities of dating-gone-wrong mixed in with superhero stereotypes.
Female superior takes on new meaning with a superhero girlfriend on top.
Super silly. That said, any guy who’s had more than a couple girlfriends in his life will recognize the needy neuroses lampooned here.
:-)
Regarding the shark scene: like every other good bit, it was in the trailer.
Regarding Wick’s Review
my favorite part was the shark scene.. but I know what you mean about the flick.. I thought that it was entertaining, but then again, when I saw it, I was going through a bad break up and the film was giving me some interestingly entertaining ideas.. but that’s all really.
