Summary - Great 4.0

I’m utterly dumbfounded as to why Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood has been garnering such negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. Most people have complained that A) The movie is boring and B) It doesn’t feel like the Robin Hood everyone knows and loves. Well, I disagree with both of those complaints. I found the movie very entertaining, a fast-paced two and a half hours, and I’d even go as far as to say that this is probably the best Robin Hood film to date. Its definitely better than other adaptations(that crappy Kevin Costner movie where he spoke with an American accent and sported a mullet).

The film basically plays out as the backstory to the legend as we see Robin Longstride before he became known the famous outlaw we know and love. The film takes on a journey from the end of the crusades to Nottingham and bringing to the start of the famous tale in Sherwood forest.

Many have complained and said the film is nothing more than a rehash of other epic tales and that they weren’t expecting the film to be a prequel. Well, let me say, if you’re a hardcore fan of the Robin Hood legend and you know the main points that make the story up, this film probably is not for you. However, I enjoyed this film and it just goes to show that the combination of Ridley Scott and Russel Crowe never fails.

Acting - Great 4.0

The acting is very strong. Russel Crowe is one of my favorite actors and he’s quite possibly the best Robin Hood to hit the silver screen(Sorry, Mr. Flynn, you’re a tad bit outdated). He plays the character as if Maximus from Gladiator was actually a funny sarcastic guy. Cate Blanchette is strong and supportive as Maid Merrian and proves that she’s a tough as nails woman who knows how to fight. Oscar Isaac is slightly over the top as King John, but he’s very fun to watch and gives an enjoyable performance. Mark Strong has proved himself a great villain in Shrerlock Holmes and Kick-Ass, I think he may be falling into the same league as some of the greatest villain actors of all time. His tough manner and deep voice prove why he lives up to his last name.

Film - Great 4.0

There isn’t much to say about the film’s quality except that its very well made. The actio scenes are well done and the costumes fit the era perfectly. Ridley Scott definitely shows us that while he can direct a fantastic action scene, he can also get a lot from his actors.

Edge - Sordid 2.7

Easily the most violent Robin Hood. This ain’t no Disney cartoon, thats for sure.

Reality - Glib 2.0

Much like 2004’s King Arthur, the film wants the audience to believe this could really happen. Well, if Robin Hood DID exist, there’s no way he could even be THAT good with a bow and arrow. But, who knows.
