Robert DeNiro leads us through a family drama that most of us can identify with: the natural drifting away that grown up kids do to their empty nesting parents. Everybody’s Fine does a great job at depicting what it must be like for a lonely dad, but make no mistake – this is a DeNiro take on the affair. In a muted style, DeNiro takes the bull by the horns in attempt to regain parental control of the situation. That said, the softness of the emotion and lump-in-throat moments are not diminished as DeNiro shows that even a tough guy can be a softie.
DeNiro, through his long list of loved movies shows his great range. Everybody’s Fine seems to be one of his most understated efforts – but that just makes him all the more worthy of our praise. Other recognizable names in the film like Drew Barrymore and Sam Rockwell – as well as the rest of the supporting cast are good, but this movie is all DeNiro.
The subject of the movie is not novel – but Director Kirk Jones finds a way to connect to all of us. Great use of a solid cast and heart-tugging drama.
