Before Nolan, there was Fincher.
David Fincher has established so much credibility over the years, he’s become one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. He’s found himself among the ranks of such class acts as Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino. Films such as Fight Club and Zodiac has proved he has the chops to make a great film, whether it be a surreal action-dramedy (Fight Club), an atmospheric mystey thriller (Zodiac), or a compelling pro-modernist drama (The Social Network). And Se7en…well…it just proves my point even further.
Se7en focuses on two detectives: Hot shot David Mills (Brad Pitt) and soon to be retired David Somerset (Morgan Freeman). Their job: find serial killer John Doe. But it won’t be easy. Each of Doe’s victims has commited one of the seven deadly sins (Sloth, pride, gluttony, greed, envy, wrath, and lust) and Doe uses unique ways to kill them and is brilliant in keeping himself from getting caught.
The plot to this film is one of the most brilliant ever to be put on paper. It uses unique twists and loopholes that would make someone like Hitchcock proud. In fact, most of the movie is left to the viewers imagination. It never insults the audiences’ intelligence.
The acting is pretty top notch as well. I wouldn’t this is Brad Pitt’s greatest performance ever, but he does play the part very well. He plays the hot shot arrogant cop role to a tee and does a decent enough job of doing so. Morgan Freeman is excellent as usual. He’s completely serious but he still has his usual charm that he brings to each of his roles. Kevin Spacey is easily the best actor in the whole movie. He’s brilliant in the role of the psychopathic John Doe. Supporting players like Gwyneth Paltrow (who is hooooottt) and R. Lee Ermey are also very good.
What else can I say about Se7en? Great acting. A brilliant script. And one of the greatest endings to a film EVER! This is one of the greatest thrillers ever and I’m sorry but anyone who is not scared by this movie is probably either dead or has no soul. This is one you HAVE to see.
