While echoing conspiracy themes that are present in today’s headlines, The Conspirator is an interesting look at a time in our nation’s history when the outrage and shock of an act of violence, led to a call for swift and decisive punishment. Not so much justice, but punishment. As one character in the film points out, "It’s not justice you’re after, but revenge.â€
Set in the days around President Lincoln’s assassination, we’re witnesses to one of the most horrific events in our nation’s history. And in the subsequent hunt for the perpetrators, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright Penn) is arrested, after it was discovered that her son and his friends met in her boarding house to plan. Charged as a conspirator, the staunch Confederate sympathizer is defended in court by Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy), a recently retired Union officer.
The movie is a heavy-handed courtroom drama that, while well made, seems to move at a methodical pace that many might find frustrating. What director Robert Redford has made is an interesting insight into a difficult time in our country, which favors historically accurate set designs and costuming over action. This is not a bad thing, but it does take a certain mindset to watch. Don’t go expecting many action-scenes.
It’s a good movie that gives us an accurate glimpse into a growing nation healing from a decisive war, and the tolls of an assassination that stressed an already uneasy balance between divided citizens.
Probably a good assessment. Good movie, and worth seeing, but a bit heavy and methodical.
Regarding BigdaddyDave’s Review
Helpful review BigD. I almost took this in last weekend but chose Atlas Shrugged instead.
I’m thinking that The Conspirator will now have to wait for streaming before I see it, but at least I know it’s worth seeing.
